Fall Gardening Tips

If you have a fountain on your yard, make sure that you remove all the fallen leaves. Outdoor fountains should be maintained properly so that the pumps will not be clogged. Cleaning the fountain regularly is important because organic matter can decompose which can later on cause algae and bacteria problems. Remove the fallen leaves daily and don’t forget to use a fountain algaecide.

Before you empty the fountain this winter, the pumps should be cleaned first. Debris is found inside the fountain pump and it should be removed because it affects the pumps inner workings. You need to remove everything that has accumulated inside the pump.

Check for cracks. During winter, the water freezes and melts; in that process, the fountain expands and contracts which can cause cracks. Make sure that you cover the fountain with a good quality cover. You don’t need to cover the fountain pedestals. If you can prevent precipitation, the fountain will not be damaged.

If you have perennial aquatics, you should sink them in the deepest portion of your pond. By doing so, they can remain dormant during winter in the warmest portion of the water in the pond. This is an excellent way to prevent damage.

For shallow ponds, you can use de-icers. This gadget heats a tiny opening on your pond which allows releasing of certain toxic gases and at the same time, oxygenating the ponds water.

For gardeners with tropical plants in their garden, it would be best to remove them before winter sets in. However, if you live in a place with mild climate, you don’t need to remove the plants. Tropical plants will find it hard to cope with cold climate. The cold temperature can cause decay which can later on damage the plants.
